Micro-communication Skills: A Four Part Series
See Dates Below
(virtual video-conference workshops)
Micro-communications are the minute and discrete interactions we have with our friends, family, coworkers, and community members every day. This four-part workshop series is designed specifically around the skills helpful for healthy Micro-communication.
After taking one, or all, of these workshops, you’ll learn skills and options to deal with the situations like those above.
You will learn, internalize, and practice a variety of Micro-communication skills to respond to all sorts of challenges in your daily communication. The workshop content and design will provide you with healthy alternatives via Micro-communications in your relationships and your life, helping you build a solid communication foundation from which to improve your relationships with and compassion for others (as well as yourself!).
You can take any of these four Micro-communication workshops individually or as a series and in any order.
All of these workshops are offered on a sliding scale for anyone who would benefit from a reduced registration fee. Email: miles@lanecdr.org

Each skill will be introduced, defined, demonstrated with vignettes, followed with written practice and skill analysis.
Educational Materials:
The workbook pages will be emailed to you for you to print out.
If you do not have a printer, or would benefit from a hard copy of the workbook, it must be requested at least 10 days in advance of the workshop and includes an additional charge.
No Prerequisite
This is a challenging skill to learn. This workshop will teach you how to use a respectful skill option to elicit more information. Spirit of Inquiry will be defined, demonstrated with vignettes, then guided written practice with analysis and dyadic practice between those in attendance. There will be a final group debrief.
Educational Materials
You may create your own practice cards from a document emailed to you or you may request a practice card packet for a small additional fee.
Preferred prerequisite:
Micro-communication Skills Part 1
This is a step by step procedure to “get ready” for a future event (be it short or long, simple or complex). The above listed Micro-communication Skills are most helpful in learning this process. After the definition, demonstration via vignettes and analysis, there will be individual preparation and then practice within a dyad. (You may sign up with someone you know or you will be matched with a partner for an hour practice session and a debrief afterwards.)
Educational Materials
Worksheets will be emailed to you a day before the workshop.
Preferred prerequisite:
Micro-communication Skills Parts 1 and 2
(This workshop will be offered more than once, especially at this juncture in our lives!)
The Deep Compassionate Listening workshop focuses on one skill grounded in respect, focused attentiveness and intentional listening. This workshop session includes a mini-lecture, vignette analysis, individual written practice and analysis, interactive practice with feedback, and finally, intensive triad practice with analysis and feedback. By the end of this session participants are guaranteed mastery of conceptual understanding and basic skill ability.
If time allows there may be a Questions & Answers segment, otherwise, anyone may communicate individually with the instructor.
Group option:
If there are 3 of you who wish to join together in person for the last hour’s “triad practice” we can organize you together for that practice session (and return to the workshop after you have completed your practice for Q&A and closing observations.)
Special note: Drs. Gilmore & Fraleigh who led our research/practitioner team (in the late 70’s and 80’s) suggest that this specific skill (with one other, Purpose Stating) are the two most influential skills to put in one’s toolbox for personal and community relationship health.
Barbara encourages everyone to become a more empathic skillful listeners, but especially “for such a time as this”!
Educational Materials
The PDF workbook can be emailed to you for you to print out, or a hard copy can be mailed to you if you register early. There are a few pages of written practice that are easier to complete if you have it in front of you on paper. It is possible to read the workbook online and print out a few pages for yourself to write on. (If you are a visual learner or a kinesthetic learner you might wish to have a hands on a hard copy.) In either case, you will be emailed several pages to print out for your written practice.
(If you would like the workbook mailed to you, that must be requested at least 10 days in advance of the workshop which includes a small additional fee.)
No Prerequisite
(Please note that for the last Triad Practice if you have a recording device (a cell phone or a tape recorder), you will be invited to record and analyze your own “mini-paraphrasing” practice for your triad exercise or on your own after the workshop. Recording and analyzing your own "mini-paraphrasing" practice will speed up your learning at least 3 fold! or more!
Barbara Daté is “Hapa” (Hawaiian for “half”) half Japanese-American and half English, raised in an intercultural, interfaith residential co-operative community of 79 families on 100 acres 30 miles west of Chicago and within a progressive Anabaptist Historic Peace Church congregation (Church of the Brethren). Witnessing first hand diverse folks living in harmony and working out conflicts provides Barbara the vision that “Peace and harmony is possible!” That foundational experience helped in her international work with the Irish and other indigenous peoples in North America and the Pacific Islands. She specializes in understanding diversity and temperament/personality.
Barbara contributes expertise that has evolved from a curriculum research team of a dozen graduate students mentored by Drs. Gilmore and Fraleigh, founders of Friendly Press, Eugene, Oregon. Beginning in the late 70’s their team developed a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on teaching adults and children Proactive, Prosocial Behavior (See original "MasterSkills" educational materials at Friendlypress.com). Additionally, we benefit from Barbara’s personal life greatly influenced by her leadership within the Church of the Brethren (“Ministry of Reconciliation”).
Barbara’s holds an Interdisciplinary Master’s Degree in Interpersonal and Small Group Communication & Conflict Resolution, as well as a Ph.D. is in Counseling Psychology, specializing in Prosocial, Proactive Behavior (both from the University of Oregon). Dr. Daté was the Esau Distinguished Visiting Professor in Conflict Resolution Studies at Menno Simons College/The University of Winnipeg 1995-1997. Barbara worked mostly outside of Eugene, Oregon, only sleeping here. More recently she had been her parents’ caregiver until her mother’s death two years ago.
She works with the Center for Dialogue & Resolution (lanecdr.org) and is a member of the oldest international organization Fellowship of Reconciliation and Under a Northern Sky.
Barbara has taught this curriculum (“The Foreign Language of Caring”) in various formats for over 3 decades (3 credit graduate, undergraduate and high school courses, intensive workshop series and regular workshops) in various contexts. This will be our first endeavor to teach them online and will be working the kinks out in the earliest online trainings.
