Trauma Informed Approaches in
Restorative Justice & Healing Focused Processes
Topics covered will include:
- How to identify trauma and dysregulation occurring for restorative justice participants;
- How to identify the restorative justice facilitator “threshold,” related to what is within and outside the scope of a restorative facilitation;
- Learning and utilizing tools and mechanisms for facilitator awareness around scope and self-identifying limits;
- Boundary setting and ethics for facilitators working with trauma;
- The neurobiology of trauma and what’s going on “behind the curtain.”
- Facilitator emotional regulation practices and self and each-other care
After completing this training, facilitators will have the foundational knowledge to conduct restorative justice facilitation with trauma survivors. This knowledge will help facilitators self-identify their limits, do no additional harm to participants in the facilitation, and set appropriate boundaries for themselves and the participants to provide the most productive healing and restorative process possible.
This training is being offered by Elaine Walters of the Trauma Healing Project (click to visit website), a nonprofit in Lane County dedicated to improving the quality of life in our communities, ending violence and abuse, and promoting healing and recovery.
Meet Your Trainer
Elaine Walters, MS is the founding Executive Director and lead trainer at the Trauma Healing Project, an organization that provides professional and community training and direct healing support for survivors. Prior to this position she coordinated the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program for the Attorney General's Sexual Assault Task Force in Oregon. For the last 28 years she has been a consultant, trainer and community organizer working to address and eliminate intimate violence. She has designed and facilitated workshops and trainings on many related topics and has provided direct services and support to youth and adults impacted by violence, abuse and other forms of trauma and oppression. She is involved in the effort to expand accessible trauma healing resources and to implement trauma-informed care, trauma healing and restorative practices regionally and state-wide.
